He qualified as a medical doctor at the University of Otago, New Zealand, before moving to Balliol College as a Rhodes Scholar, where he read Philosophy, Politics and Economics. He stayed on in Oxford to complete a Doctorate in Philosophy, writing his thesis on the ethics of human enhancement. Tom is currently working on the ethics of creating dangerous knowledge and of modifying moral dispositions.
